Thessaloniki is often seen as Greece's cultural capital, where history and modernity intertwine. Founded in 315 BC, the city is home to historical landmarks like the iconic White Tower and the Rotunda, showcasing its rich Byzantine and Ottoman influences, reflecting its rich Byzantine and Ottoman influences.

Archaeological Sites 

The Palace of Galerius at Navarino Square was built by the Roman Emperor Galerius Valerius Maximianus at the end of the 3rd Century. The Galerian Arch (Kamara) was erected shortly before 305 AD to commemorate the victory of Galerius over the Persians. The Roman Market and Theatre are located at the Law Court Square (Dikastiria) south of Egnatia Street. Also nearby are The Roman Baths just north of the church of Agios Dimitrios and the Nymphaion, an elegant monopteral, circular building.  

The Ancient Site of Vergina is also a UNESCO site and one of the most extensive archaeological sites in Greece. Located about 2 hours from Thessaloniki. the ancient city of Aigai the first capital of Macedonia has extensive ruins including the tomb of Phillip and the summer palace of King Antigonas Gonatas.  

The Ancient City and Archaeological Museum of Pella is another important site and a little closer to Thessaloniki. Pella was the ancient capital of King Archelaus of Macedonia and the birthplace of Alexander the Great. The site is known for its mosaic floors made from small pebbles. exploration of the site began in 1953 and continues today. In 2006, a farmer accidentally uncovered the largest tomb ever found in Greece. 

Thematic Parks Along the Waterfront 

Walking from the port or the White Tower to the Thessaloniki Concert Hall, you will find the 8 thematic parks along the waterfront. From the White Tower to Thessaloniki’s Concert Hall, is where the renewed and reconstructed New Waterfront of Thessaloniki begins, of a 3,5km length. The first theme park is the Garden of Alexander. Next, just before the Macedonia Pallas Hotel and in front of the Garden of the Afternoon Sun you will face the unique artwork, “Umbrellas”, of the sculptor George Zogkolopoulos. The thematic spaces sorted throughout the length of the New Beach, the so-called Gardens, will give children the opportunity to play and grownups will have the chance to relax. In the theme parks, you will also find skating and skateboarding tracks, but also tennis and basketball courts.

Throughout the length of the Old and New Waterfront, there is a bike path. Spend a relaxing day with your family in the beautiful parks on the waterfront!
